Berr Group — Supporting Business

BERR GROUP · OUR STORY

Why Berr Group Exists

Every business has a beginning. Ours began with the experience of running one.

When I first became self-employed, I wanted something quite straightforward. I wanted to do good work, look after my customers and build a business I could be proud of.

I had the practical skills, the determination and the willingness to put in the hours. What I hadn't fully appreciated was just how much time I would spend doing everything other than the work itself.

Running a business, I discovered, is very different from simply being good at your job.

The work didn't finish when I got home.

There were customers to contact, quotations to prepare, receipts to sort and paperwork that couldn't be put off indefinitely.

Sometimes it meant sitting down at the computer late in the evening, when I would much rather have been spending time with my family.

And then there was the website.

I wanted something professional that would give customers confidence in my work. But getting a website organised, understanding how people might find it on Google and trying to make sense of search engine optimisation was another challenge altogether.

I was a tradesman. I wasn't a website developer, an accountant or a marketing specialist.

Yet somehow, when you're self-employed, you're expected to become all of those things.

“Being good at your trade doesn't automatically make the business side easy.”

That is something I came to understand very well.

I remember the time spent working through bookkeeping, trying to keep everything organised for tax, and wondering whether there was a simpler way of doing things.

Not because I was unwilling to do the administration. It was simply that every hour spent on paperwork was an hour that couldn't be spent working, finding customers or enjoying life outside the business.

Then circumstances changed.

My self-employed business came to an end around the COVID-19 pandemic.

But the experience of running it never really left me.

I continued thinking about the difficulties that people working for themselves face, particularly those who are excellent at what they do but don't necessarily have the time, resources or interest to manage all the technology and administration that comes with running a business.

I knew those frustrations because I had experienced them.

And I began to wonder whether I could use that experience to create something useful for others.

“What if running a business could be made a little easier?”

Not through complicated systems that take weeks to understand.

Not by expecting people to become experts in technology.

But through practical services and straightforward tools that help take some of the pressure away.

That question became the starting point for Berr Group.

A business with family at its heart.

The name BERR comes from the initials of family members who support the business and what I am trying to build.

It matters to me that the business carries that connection.

Berr Group is family-run, with its administration managed from a home office. We are building it carefully, with the ambition to develop a business that is useful, sustainable and capable of growing over time.

There are no grand claims about where we've come from. We are at the beginning of this journey, and I believe there is value in being open about that.

What we do have is an understanding of why this work matters.

“A business should support the life you're trying to build, not take over every part of it.”

That thought sits behind much of what Berr Group is developing.

Turning experience into something practical.

Our first areas of work reflect the very things I found difficult when I was self-employed.

Professional websites that help businesses present themselves properly and make it easier for customers to get in touch.

Business administration support designed around everyday tasks such as enquiries, quotations and invoicing.

And software such as Genesis 1, which begins with helping people capture and organise receipts without having to spend their evenings sorting through paperwork.

These are different services, but they share the same purpose.

They are about giving business owners back some of their time and helping them feel more in control of the work behind the scenes.

We know that every business operates differently. What helps a roofer may not be exactly what helps a shopkeeper, a cleaner or a growing service company.

So our approach is to listen, understand the problem and look for a practical solution rather than assume that one system will suit everyone.

Looking ahead.

I don't expect Berr Group to change the world overnight.

But I do believe that small improvements can make a significant difference to somebody's working day.

A website that brings in an enquiry.

A quotation that's easier to prepare.

A receipt that's recorded without another evening of paperwork.

Individually, these may seem like small things. For someone trying to run a business, they can mean a great deal.

And perhaps that is the best way to explain why Berr Group exists.

“We understand the work behind running a business, because we've lived it.”

Berr Group is being built around that experience, supported by family, and guided by a simple ambition:

To make the everyday running of business easier for the people who do the work.
